Recently over here a child was shot with a sawn off shotgun. She either did it herself, or her brother did it, accident. However, their father was really responsible because it was an unlicensed gun, loaded & not in a gun safe. Basically he was/is a criminal.
BUT, the Greens Party have jumped on this saying that recently "watered down" safe keeping measured in the firearms legislation was to blame. Total bullshit of course, gun safes are still a legal requirement. There is nothing the law could have done to have avoided this death, accept perhaps to have implemented tougher penalties for gun crimes, ie longer prison sentences. But the ignorant public will pick up on this & blame the gun lobby & the law abiding firearms owner (LAFO) for this child's death.
Criminals can get guns anytime they want on the black market, criminals do NOT obey the law, criminals do not use gun safes, own a firearms licence of register their illegal firearms. All these laws & controls are aimed at LAFO.

It's a sad story Keith but one that should be learned from. Pushing harder laws on lawful gun owners won't stop criminals as you said.

This situation exists in a similar form in the UK. There is a huge increase in knife crime with (despite Police repeatedly saying over 95% of knife crime being from kitchen knives) calls to clamp down on hunting knives (usually referred to by our press as weapons). The simple, but harsh, truth is that when caught the offenders are given sentences that are usually too lenient and as a result there is no deterrent. Blaming people for owning knives is an excuse for a lax justice system.

Totally agree. We can't even carry our pocket knives over here now, but it has not stopped knife assaults. Why would it???!!!

the laws usually target the law abiding anyway, the ones that don't want to abide by the laws will just ignore them.
 
There was a quote from a pro gun Peer in the House of Lords (Baron Swansea) just after the Hungerford shootings, his reply to the anti firearm lobbyists was that"You can't legislate for nutters."
There will always be criminals and nutters with access to firearms. So often is there is a knee jerk reaction by government to any act of gun crime because the powers that be need to be seen to have power and be exercising it for the public good. All they're really accomplishing is to chip away at the rights of legal gun owners rather then prevent gun crime.

There is the age old cry of"We're taking guns off the streets."which is complete balls because legal guns haven't been on the streets in the hands of the general public since 1919. The legal guns are all safely locked away. The only guns on British streets are either in the hands of the authorities or in the hands of criminals......and I'm not sure which scares me more.

The so called knife crime epidemic has come about because so many weak or disadvantaged kids feel scared. They start carrying a knife to defend themselves from street violence and so it escalates the violence. They form groups in order to defend themselves better from other groups, suddenly the news is full of knife wielding gangs. I'm not saying it's right but it makes sense. Now we have criminalised the act of possessing a knife(which in itself is just a simple tool) instead of concentrating on properly prosecuting the few who have used a knife as an offensive weapon. The authorities are now using the cry"We're taking knives off the streets." (Sigh)
Will we soon be required by government to hand in all our kitchen knives and garden implements? Who knows?
 
that's the trouble if you allow other people, most of whom think they know better than us, to make laws for us.
 
its only a small majority that don't obey the laws and they will never obey them no matter what laws you make, the vast majority of the population are law abiding and follow the rules.
 
yep the laws sure do hit the law abiding citizen hard every time and the criminals just keep getting stronger
with the power of a gun levels out a fight ,nor matter how big a person is, man v woman ect
