To me, foot comfort is very important, so I am very picky as to what socks I wear. It can make a real difference to how much I enjoy a day in the field!
I have always found Smartwool technical socks among the most comfortable and now Smartwool have launched a new range, PhD that I think are even better than their other ranges.
Made to give “the highest degree of performance”, the PhD range includes “Outdoor Light Crew” and “Outdoor Medium Crew” models, both of which I have tried. The “Light Crew” is made from 77% wool 22% nylon and 1% elastic with 4 compression bands (ankle, arch, upper and lower instep) and flex zones for a fantastic fit, mesh panels on the instep for ventilation, a flat knit toe seam for comfort and high density Wool On Wool impact zone cushioning at heel and metatarsal zones for protection and comfort as well as light “half cushioning” in the sole.
With wool next to your skin you have comfort as well as natural moisture, temperature and odour control and the “Duro yarn” is concentrated in wear areas for durability. These “Light Crew” socks are ideal for daily wear, light walking and warmer weather, while the Medium Crew(79% wool 20% nylon 1% elastic) are pretty much identical, but have a full cushioning for tougher conditions.
I am an instant convert to these socks, finding them more comfortable than most other socks I own in both leather and rubber footwear. Both the light and medium socks are fully machine washable and dryable, durable, comfortable and smart.
The PhD Outdoor Light Crew come in 5 colour combinations and the PhD Outdoor Medium crew in 4, both available in sizes M-XL. The Light Crew cost around £15.95, the Medium crew around £16.95. Both have care instructions, guarantee and “green credentials” of natural products as well!
